What is a frenectomy?

First let's define frenulum: these are pieces of connective tissue in your mouth that can aid or restrict movement depending on their condition. A "tie" (most commonly a tongue tie) occurs when this connective tissue is too short/tight, limiting movement. A frenectomy is the surgical release of this tissue to restore movement and function.

When do I need a frenectomy?

If you have a tie in your frenulum that inhibits movement, affects your speech, or causes airway dysfunction, a frenectomy may be beneficial for you.

Do frenectomies hurt?

Frenectomies are known to be a minimally invasive procedure without much pain. As with any work in the mouth, you might feel some discomfort following the procedure, but that will abate quickly and can easily be managed by over the counter pain relievers.

What is the recovery after a frenectomy?

Downtime after a frenectomy is negligible and you should be able to resume normal activities fairly quickly. The healing process takes a couple of weeks; you'll want to stick to easy to ingest foods like smoothies and yogurt for the first few days to avoid irritation. To prevent reattachment, you'll want to perform the exercises given you by us to strengthen the muscle and improve function.
